Rock n Roll Subculture

September 8, 2010
To Mr. Nadziejko and English 102 class,
For my semester project, I will be detailing the youth subculture of rock and roll.  This subculture is a broad one, and contains a wide variety of people.  However, there are many characteristics that can be used to describe the rock and roll culture.  To find people of this subculture will not be difficult, because I have many friends that consider themselves “rockers” and I know there are many in the Saint Louis area.  In my research, I will be looking for common variables that define this subculture such as dress, terminology, styles, interests and behaviors.  These can be discovered at many locations in our area such as music stores and concert venues.  I will look at the religious perspective of rock and roll as well as the “politics” of rock and roll.  Since rock and roll is a broad topic, I will look at different types of it as well, detailing punk rock and metal as well.  As I looked into my topic, I found that many music websites as well as other databases contained information about this group and what it means to be a “rocker.”  Websites like the official Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website contain information, as well as online magazines such as Rolling Stone and newspapers found on EBSCO.  Rock and roll has a long-running history and has changed much over the past fifty years, but many of its values and ideas remain the same.  I look forward to getting a more in-depth look at this culture and exploring what it has to offer to my perspective on subcultures.
Sincerely,
Robyn Dexter

  1. I like your topic overall. It's pretty similar to mine.

    Questions:
    1) Who are you going to interview?
    2) Which venues are you going to go to?
    3) Are you going to interview any of the local bands?

    Comments:
    - The topic overall is very good, but it is going to come with a lot of work and detail. Be prepared to be surprised at how broad of a topic the WHOLE rock n' roll youth subculture is.

  2. arg-- typos

Patrick has some great points-- will you be looking at smaller bands just starting out? Regional badasses? Or the big stadium-fillers? Will you be differentiating the sub-genres within rock?

  3. What do you consider "rock and roll" sub culture? well at least these days? Do you think it will be hard to find true to the genre present day rock and roll bands?

I really dont think that dress and style have anything to do with rock and roll personally...

I think this will be really fun for you, my advice would be to broaden your group.. maybe instead of rock and roll, you could do St. Louis diy, or St. Louis Local Talent..

What rock and roll shows are on the up and coming that you could possibly go see?

  4. On looking at this as a whole, I think it may be too broad to do. I'm thinking of narrowing it to a specific genre of rock and roll or like Nichole said, sticking to St Louis Local Talent (of which there is a lot!)

You guys brought up a lot of good points, and I'm definitely going to take all your comments into consideration! :)

  5. Do you think that you may be doing a bit of a broad topic? I mean, it'd be cool if you covered rock and roll, but metal and punk are a variation of the rock genre. Including those might be a bit much to study, just saying. What kinds of bands are you going to be researching? Are they more modern bands, or are they cover bands of the old rock'n'roll originals?

  6. I think its a little broad of a topic, but should be interesting. Who are you going to interview? Where are you going to go? Are you doing local rock and roll or national?
